We still see that exact type of behaviour today, despite us thinking we are incredibly advanced. She takes part in the same system that exploited and damaged her so deeply. Also, Amara had been made a freedwoman and buys slaves herself, justifying it for her own survival. I'm enjoying books that take place during these historical times that we glorify and romanticize and choose to focus on the most overlooked and lowest status people. That it is a deeply sad insight into the treatment of the enslaved, but also the most romantic sentiment. The one she quoted was along the lines of "I bought my wife so no one would ever use her to wipe their dirty hands again". ![]() She noted that graffiti in Pompeii was inspirational of that.
